Battery Maintenance & Service

A 12V battery usually gives problems in service due to the combination of the following reasons:

  • Overcharging
  • Undercharging.
  • Insufficient topping up or low electrolyte level due to leakage in container.

Effects of electrolyte below top of the plates

  • Abnormal sulfating takes place
  • Exothermic reaction takes place.
  • Separators get damaged.

What does a battery contains?

  • Casting/ Containers: Heat sealed & leak proof containers.
  • Positive Plate: flat pasted type with lead dioxide (PbO) to resist corrosion & for longer life.
  • Negative Plate: flat pasted type of sponge lead (Pb).
  • Electrolyte: high purity sulphuric acid along with additives to improve heat dissipation.
  • Separator: high porosity absorbent type with low internal resistance. It is used to electrically isolate the positive & negative electrodes. It prevents short circuit through physical contact
  • Valve: self releasing, pressure regulating valve
  • Terminals: high conductivity brass terminals for better electrical conductivity
